Gaming in China: More chaperones in China’s Internet cafes

Young Chinese gamers won’t have to worry about Fel Orcs, Forest Trolls, and Warp Stalkers when playing the Burning Crusade, so much as they will the newly appointed security guards patrolling the aisles at their local Internet cafe. It’s campaign time again in China, and from July 1 through the end of September, the Chinese Ministry of Culture will be stepping up efforts to keep minors out of the nation’s cyber cafes. In Beijing alone, 107 additional security guards, as well as newly trained middle school teachers will be supervising 71 such hangouts.

Internet in China: first definition of Internet addiction

Chinese doctors released the country’s first diagnostic definition of Internet addiction recently, amid efforts to address an increasing number of psychological problems that reportedly result from Internet overuse. Tao Ran, a medical expert at Beijing’s Military General Hospital, where the definition was developed, said it was also the first time for China to officially designate hospital psychiatric units to treat such cases.

Internet in China: digital advertising spend to rocket

The Chinese love affair with the internet will see digital ad spend increase 40% to $5.2bn (£3.07bn) next year, making the booming Asian online economy roughly the same size as the current UK market, according to a report. The study by KPMG, to be unveiled today at the MediaGuardian Create in China conference in central London, estimates that the total ad spend on all media in the Chinese market will grow by 22% this year and 19.5% next year.
