Internet in China: online shoppers spend 2.3 billion U.S. dollars in 1st half of 2008
"Online Chinese shoppers spent 16.2 billion yuan (2.3 billion U.S. dollars) in 19 major cities in the first half of 2008, China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) said on recently. The findings were based on a survey carried out in four municipalities directly under the central government -- Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and Chongqing -- and 15 developed cities such as Changchun, Dalian, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Jinan and Guangzhou, among others..."  read on

Living in China: Beijing’s Consumer Price Index rose 6.5% in April 2008
"Beijing's consumer price index (CPI) rose 6.5% in April, according to the latest statistics from the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Statistics and the Chinese National Bureau of Statistics Beijing Survey Organization. Food prices rose 21.6%; while non-food prices rose 0.3%. Consumer goods prices rose 8.7% and that of service rose 0.8%. Food prices increased by 21.6% as compared with the same month last year, among which grain prices increased 9.0%; oil prices increased 29.2%; meat and its products prices increased 46.8%; egg prices increased 6.3%; aquatic products increased 19.9%; and vegetables prices increased 11.4%..."  read on

Living in China: Shanghai heads list of expats’ favorite cities
"Shanghai maintains the highest quality of life on Chinese mainland for Asian expats, but environmental pollution problem is still a concern, according to the latest survey. The Location Ranking Survey, conducted by one of the world's largest human resources organizations, ECA International, ranked Shanghai in 11th place in Asia and 78th in the world in terms of expat living conditions. Autodesk Supports China’s Digital Design Education
"In cooperation with China's Ministry of Education, Autodesk has launched China Student Design Community to provide free digital design tools to Chinese students, in order to support of China's digital design innovation and engineering education. Previously, the company has made investments in China's education field, including the establishment of joint labs in five Chinese universities of Tsinghua University, Tongji University, Harbin Institute of Technology, South China University of Technology and Shanghai Jiaotong University. Chinese People and Their Mobile Phones: China starts 3G commercial trials in 8 cities
"The parent of China Mobile (0941.HK: Quote, Profile, Research), the country's top wireless operator, have started commercial trials of a homegrown third-generation wireless standard, TD-SCDMA, in eight cities on April 1, state media said recently. Shares in several Hong Kong-listed equipment vendors, including China Communications Services Corp Ltd (0552.HK: Quote, Profile, Research) and China Wireless Technologies Ltd (2369.HK: Quote, Profile, Research), rose on Friday, as investors anticipate heavy spending on telecoms gear. The commercial trials will help to improve TD-SCDMA technology, as well as provide better mobile services during the Beijing Olympics, according to Xinhua News agency."  read on

Internet in China: Chinese market overtakes U.S. as top Web market
"China has surpassed the United States to become the world's largest Internet market by number of users, a research firm said on recently. The estimate by Beijing-based BDA was based on data from China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) which indicated that the country's Internet users totaled 210 million at end-2007. Living in China: Average lifespan in Shanghai has passed 81
"The average lifespan for Shanghai people reached 81.08 last year - the first time it has passed 81. Infant mortality was three in 1,000 and the pre and post-natal mortality rate for women was 6.68 in 100,000, according to statistics for 2007 just issued by the Shanghai Health Bureau. That's way above the national average: although Chinese people's average lifespan has almost doubled since 1949 -- shoting up by 36 years and people now live to 71 -- other cities in China, like Beijing, will only reach 80 by 2010..."  read on

Internet in China: online game market hit 1.8 billion US Dollars in 2007
"China's online gaming market surged 66.7 percent year-on-year to hit 12.8 billion yuan in 2007, according to a report released by i Research Inc., a Shanghai-based consulting firm. The jump is largely driven by China's massive player-pool and operators' marketing efforts, said the firm. The number of China's netizens grew 53 percent last year from 2006 to hit 210 million by December, which means the country is close to overtaking the United States to become the world's No. 1 by web population size, according to China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC): Nearly 60 percent of the web users (more than 120 million) have played at least one title in the past year, with an average of 7.3 hours spent on the online games every week. Twenty-one percent of them even played more than 10 hours a week..."  read on
