Watch Pranav Mistry’s “The thrilling potential of SixthSense technology” demos at TED

We’ve already seen MIT researcher Pranav Mistry’s SixthSense projector-based augmented-reality system in some cool demos, but he just gave a TED talk and his latest ideas are the wildest yet. At TEDIndia, Pranav Mistry demos several tools that help the physical world interact with the world of data — including a deep look at his SixthSense device and a new, paradigm-shifting paper “laptop.” In an onstage Q&A, Mistry says he’ll open-source the software behind SixthSense, to open its possibilities to all.

Interaction Design Association (IxDA) 2010 Global Student Competition: Deadline Extension, Open now to Groups

After careful consultation among the jury and feedback from representatives of some of the top IxD educational institutions from around the world, the competition commitee have made two big decisions: (1) DEADLINE EXTENSION: We are extending the deadline by a full month to 31-Dec-2009 (11:59p US/Pacific Standard Time). If you have submitted your work prior to 26-Nov (noon US/Pacific Standard Time) you can re-submit your work. Otherwise, all submissions are final. (2) GROUPS/TEAMS: We are now opening up the competition to group submissions. However, and this is a big “however”, only 1 representative can be declared the “primary representative” for a team or group and be eligible to win the scholarship to Interaction 10 | Savannah and compete in Stage 2 of the competition.

Watch David Merrill’s “Natural Interactions with Digital Content” Seminar on People, Computers, and Design at Stanford University

In this talk, David Merrill gives us an overview of his research on a number of novel platforms for accessing and manipulating digital content. These systems use expressive gesture and visual attention as inputs, explore multi-user interaction, and leverage our understanding of physical materials. I will focus on my most ambitious project and Ph.D. topic, Siftables, a tangible interaction platform that gives physical embodiment to information and digital media items. The system utilizes sensing, graphical display, embedded computation and wireless communication to free interactions with digital content from the desktop environment. Siftables points the way toward a new generation of interactive tools that bend to our needs, rather than bending us to meet their limitations.

Watch Ted Selker’s “Context Aware Computing” Seminar on People, Computers, and Design at Stanford University

Humans work to understand and react to each others intentions. The context aware computing group at the MIT Media lab has demonstrated that across most aspects of our life, computers can do this too. The groups demonstrations range from car to office kitchen to and even bed. The goal is to show that human intentions can be recognized considered and responded to appropriately by computer systems. This talk demonstrates that Artificial intelligence can competently Improve human-computer interaction with systems and even each other in a myriad of natural scenarios […]

Watch Ben Shneiderman’s “Science 2.0: The Design Science of Collaboration” Seminar on People, Computers, and Design at Stanford University

Advancing Science 2.0 will require a shift in priorities to promote intense collaboration, integrative thinking, teamwork-based education/training, and case study ethnographic research methods. Science 2.0 will reduce the gulf between basic and applied research, while bringing theory and practice closer together. This talk lays out an ambitious vision that will impact research funding, educational practices, and democratic principles […]

Watch Jacob Burghardt’s “UX Opportunity Mapping for Knowledge Work Applications” presentation

Jacob Burghardt collated a lot of interesting thoughts on interaction design in his e-book Working through Screens, to serve as reference for product teams creating new or iteratively improved applications for thinking work (or what Peter Drucker called knowledge workers). He has been talking about his book and posted a few presentations on the web […]

Watch Camille Moussette’s “Sketching Multimodal and Haptic Interfaces” talk at IxDA | Interaction ’09 Conference

In this presentation, Camille Moussette explores the opportunities and challenges related to developing new multimodal interfaces specifically based on the touch sense. It will present various methods, techniques, tools and processes that interaction designers can use to assess, sketch, create and evaluate dynamic haptic and multimodal interfaces […]

Watch Marc Rettig’s “How to Change Complicated Stuff” talk at IxDA | Interaction ’09 Conference

In this talk Marc Rettig offers insights into the question “what is it like to actually achieve a meaningful, sustainable, positive difference in life?”, drawing lessons from a number of serious, heartfelt attempts to affect change. The work we have all done in recent decades has prepared us to take on much bigger challenges. The foundations of design remain powerfully effective. That said, there are ways in which “designing for change” requires additions to our inventory of methods, and transformations in the way we plan and conduct our work […]

Watch Dave Malouf’s “Foundations of Interaction Design: Bringing design critique to interaction design” talk at IxDA | Interaction ‘09 conference

While interaction designers have strong evaluation skills through quantitative research such as usability, IxD lacks the same types of aesthetic-based design criticism that graphic design, architecture and industrial design have. This 25-minutes presentation is meant to offer the beginnings of a discussion around what could are the foundations of interaction design, how do they impact aesthetics of interaction and how can they be used for design critique within an interaction design practice […]
