We’ve already seen MIT researcher Pranav Mistry’s SixthSense projector-based augmented-reality system in some cool demos, but he just gave a TED talk and his latest ideas are the wildest yet. At TEDIndia, Pranav Mistry demos several tools that help the physical world interact with the world of data — including a deep look at his SixthSense device and a new, paradigm-shifting paper “laptop.” In an onstage Q&A, Mistry says he’ll open-source the software behind SixthSense, to open its possibilities to all.

After careful consultation among the jury and feedback from representatives of some of the top IxD educational institutions from around the world, the competition commitee have made two big decisions: (1) DEADLINE EXTENSION: We are extending the deadline by a full month to 31-Dec-2009 (11:59p US/Pacific Standard Time). If you have submitted your work prior to 26-Nov (noon US/Pacific Standard Time) you can re-submit your work. Otherwise, all submissions are final. (2) GROUPS/TEAMS: We are now opening up the competition to group submissions. However, and this is a big “however”, only 1 representative can be declared the “primary representative” for a team or group and be eligible to win the scholarship to Interaction 10 | Savannah and compete in Stage 2 of the competition.
Submissions are now open for the Interaction Design Association (IxDA) Global Student Interaction Design Competition. Submissions are due by November 30th, 23:59, US/PST. This competition is the first of its kind: IxDA will bring 5 finalists to Interaction 10 | Savannah, the 3rd Annual International Conference co-hosted by the Savannah College of Art & Design where they will compete head to head to find a winner. All finalists will be given a full scholarship for attending the conference.
In this talk, David Merrill gives us an overview of his research on a number of novel platforms for accessing and manipulating digital content. These systems use expressive gesture and visual attention as inputs, explore multi-user interaction, and leverage our understanding of physical materials. I will focus on my most ambitious project and Ph.D. topic, Siftables, a tangible interaction platform that gives physical embodiment to information and digital media items. The system utilizes sensing, graphical display, embedded computation and wireless communication to free interactions with digital content from the desktop environment. Siftables points the way toward a new generation of interactive tools that bend to our needs, rather than bending us to meet their limitations.
