China’s auto imports grew rapidly in the first half, as world auto giants turned to the Chinese market after the U.S. economic slump and rocketing oil prices drove sales down on U.S. and European markets, the Chinese General Administration of Customs said recently. From January to June, China bought 212,000 motor vehicles from abroad, up 53.2 percent from the same period of last year. China’s consumer price index(CPI) rose 8.5 percent in April, mainly driven by uncurbed food costs, the National Bureau of Statistics(NBS) said recently. The figure, compared with 8.3 percent in March and a nearly 12-year-high of 8.7 percent in February, was broadly in line with most forecasts.
The NBS attributed the figure to a low base of comparison: the CPI rose just 3 percent in April 2007. Another factor was the rapid increase in world grain and commodity prices…
Beijing’s consumer price index (CPI) rose 6.5% in April, according to the latest statistics from the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Statistics and the Chinese National Bureau of Statistics Beijing Survey Organization. Food prices rose 21.6%; while non-food prices rose 0.3%. Consumer goods prices rose 8.7% and that of service rose 0.8%. Food prices increased by 21.6% as compared with the same month last year, among which grain prices increased 9.0%; oil prices increased 29.2%; meat and its products prices increased 46.8%; egg prices increased 6.3%; aquatic products increased 19.9%; and vegetables prices increased 11.4%…
A single village in China is responsible for cranking out 60% of the world’s paintings. The overwhelming majority of the paintings are slavish reproductions of famous paintings. The artists doing the work are very talented, however, and an organization called Regional asked some of the artists to paint themselves. The results are incredible. Measuring “Design Innovation”
People love trying to measure and quantify things, because then the incomprehensible seems like it makes sense. Psychologists try to measure anger; dating websites try to boil ethereal qualities into ‘match’ numbers; and now Roberto Verganti and Claudio Dell’Era, researchers at Italy’s Politecnico di Milano, are trying to measure ‘design innovation.’ So what did they find?
Weather conditions in southern China will remain severe and relief work difficult, Chinese leaders warned yesterday as the country battles with the worst snowfalls in decades. The warning came after a meeting chaired by Chinese President Hu Jintao to study the relief effort. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has just concluded his second visit in a week to central Hunan Province, the region worst hit.
