Chinese People and Their Mobile Phones: 6 Telecoms to Merge Their Assets

China has told its six telecommunications companies to merge their assets, allowing fixed-line carriers to expand into wireless services and creating three operators that will offer phone and Internet connections to 1.3 billion people. Under the plan, the parent of China Telecom will buy a mobile phone network from the parent of China Unicom, which in turn will merge with the company that controls the China Netcom Group, the Ministry of Industry and Information said in a statement on Saturday. Living in China: Shanghai foreigner influx doubles in five years

The number of expats living in Shanghai and those working in local foreign-invested enterprises almost doubled from 2002 to 2006, according to a Shanghai Federation of Trade Unions report released recently. Issued every five years, the report said there were a total of 119,876 expatriates living in the city in 2006, compared to 61,610 in 2002. Shanghai maintains the highest quality of life on Chinese mainland for Asian expats, but environmental pollution problem is still a concern, according to the latest survey. Autodesk Supports China’s Digital Design Education

In cooperation with China’s Ministry of Education, Autodesk has launched China Student Design Community to provide free digital design tools to Chinese students, in order to support of China’s digital design innovation and engineering education. Previously, the company has made investments in China’s education field, including the establishment of joint labs in five Chinese universities of Tsinghua University, Tongji University, Harbin Institute of Technology, South China University of Technology and Shanghai Jiaotong University. Internet in China: more than 70% Hong Kong households connected to internet

More than 70 percent of Hong Kong households have a personal computer connected to the Internet, strengthening the city’s status as one of the world’s leading digital hubs: Hong Kong’s Census and Statistics Department said that the figure represents a slight rise on last year when 71.7 percent of households had a computer and 67.1 percent had it connected to the Internet.
