Tourism in Germany: The Eltz Castle

DW’s Hannah Hummel asks the owner of the Eltz Castle about life at the back then and now.

Luxury, romance and a fairytale atmosphere — that’s how we imagine life at the medieval Eltz Castle. But what is it really like to live there? Spoiler: there are 80 rooms, all of which require a little maintenance.

DW’s Hannah Hummel asks owner Jakob Graf zu Eltz about life at the castle back then and now. The castle resident has even set up his home office there. Is that something for you, too?

The Eltz Castle

My Takeaways

I visited the Eltz Castle a few years ago when I lived closer to it (Bonn). Growing up in South America, we have a fascination for castles. Then you visit one, and you realize that life (even for nobles) was tough: sometimes we romanticize the past, and we take for granted some conveniences of our modern lives.
