Gal Costa, one of the greatest singers in Brazil, dies at the age of 77

Gal Costa just passed away. According to her facebook page:

It is with deep sadness and a tight heart that we announce the death of singer Gal Costa, on the morning of Wednesday, November 9, in São Paulo. Information about the wake and burial will be released later.

We appreciate everyone’s affection at this difficult time.

Gal Costa (born Maria da Graça Costa Penna Burgos, 26 September 1945 – 9 November 2022) was a Brazilian singer of popular music. She was a principal figure of the tropicalia music scene in Brazil in the late 1960s and appeared on the acclaimed compilation Tropicália: ou Panis et Circenses (1968).

It was 57 years of career, started in 1965, when the singer presented unpublished songs by Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. She was still Maria da Graça when she released “Eu vim da Bahia”, Gil’s samba about the origin of the singer and composer

The last album released was “Nenhuma Dor”, in 2021, when Gal re-recorded songs such as “Meu Bem, Meu Mal”, “Juventude Transviada” and “Coração Vagabundo”, with singers such as Seu Jorge, Tim Bernardes and Criolo.
