Chen Xuyuan, president of Shanghai International Port (Group) Co, said Shanghai would hold on to its record as the world’s biggest port this year after it handled 7.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in the first quarter, a rise of 12 percent year on year. Chen said the figure for the whole of this year is estimated to hit 30 million TEUs.

Shanghai surpassed Singapore to become the world’s biggest port last year. Meanwhile, the city government has begun to lower or remove fees levied by shipyards on container-truck drivers to reduce their burden
