3.27 percent of Chinese people have basic scientific knowledge, 20 years behind developed countries, a survey by the China Research Institute for Science Popularization (CRISP) revealed recently.

Yang Wenzhi, a science education director with CRISP, attributed the low levels of knowledge to the country’s slow development prior to the 1980s. Poor quality education was also to blame for the situation, he added. “We are focused on catching up with developed countries and the gap is narrowing”, he said.

The latest national survey on scientific knowledge is the eighth of its kind. More than 68,000 people were interviewed between November 2009 and May of 2010.
