Shanghai schools should monitor their students’ psychological health and educate them about psychological problems to prevent them from falling into depression because of the economic crisis.
Education officials said at the city’s youth protection meeting yesterday that changes in families’ financial situations and college graduates’ increasingly high unemployment rate may weigh on young students’ minds.
“We should fully study the influence of economic crisis on minors’ psychological health,” said Deputy Mayor Shen Xiaoming.
With businesses shutting down or hit by the financial crisis, parents may lose jobs and family incomes greatly reduced, he said.
And the difficulty of college students finding jobs may affect minors, especially students in vocational schools.
A sophomore girl suffered severe injuries after jumping from the fifth floor of a school building in the Aurora Education Group recently. The vocational institute launched psychological screening for all students after the accident.
