Shanghai trademark watchdogs have investigated 3,032 trademark violation cases involving 99.72 million yuan (US$13.66 million) worth of goods since the city’s working plan for intellectual property protection was enacted two years ago: officials have paid special attention to small commodities markets, promotion sales of international brands, and stores in hotels.
The number of intellectual property violations reported to the Shanghai Public Security Bureau and the value of goods allegedly being counterfeited have been on the increase since 2004, the bureau announced recently.
The bureau said the number of reports is increasing by a little more than 54 percent a year, although it refused to say how many such cases were reported last year. It said 90 percent of the cases involved trademark violations.
The value of counterfeit goods involved has grown by 20.6 percent a year, the bureau said, again without giving the value of allegedly fake goods investigated last year.
The bureau said economic investigation departments in the city solved 185 intellectual property violations from January 2006 to February this year and recovered illicit goods and money worth 237 million yuan (US$30.5 million).
