Education in China: Gap between rural and urban education levels huge
A survey made public recently by Peking University shows that China is seeing an increasingly large gap between the education levels of people holding urban and rural permanent residency permits, or hukou in Chinese. Architecture & Urban Planning in China: Shanghai is the world’s 4th tallest city
Shanghai made it to 4th place in Forbes' list of the world's tallest cities with a total of 21 towers climbing over 700 feet. The current tallest is the Shanghai World Financial Center, at 1,614 feet, but it'll be surpassed by the Shanghai Tower, which is expected to be completed in 2014 and reach heights of 2,000 feet. Living in China: Shanghai foreigner influx doubles in five years
The number of expats living in Shanghai and those working in local foreign-invested enterprises almost doubled from 2002 to 2006, according to a Shanghai Federation of Trade Unions report released recently. Issued every five years, the report said there were a total of 119,876 expatriates living in the city in 2006, compared to 61,610 in 2002. Internet in China: online game market hit 1.8 billion US Dollars in 2007
China's online gaming market surged 66.7 percent year-on-year to hit 12.8 billion yuan in 2007, according to a report released by i Research Inc., a Shanghai-based consulting firm. The jump is largely driven by China's massive player-pool and operators' marketing efforts, said the firm. The number of China's netizens grew 53 percent last year from 2006 to hit 210 million by December, which means the country is close to overtaking the United States to become the world's No. 1 by web population size, according to China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC): Nearly 60 percent of the web users (more than 120 million) have played at least one title in the past year, with an average of 7.3 hours spent on the online games every week. China Enacts National Competition Law
Culminating a 13-year drafting process, on August 30 the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress enacted China's first competition law, the Anti-Monopoly Law ( [Fan Longduan Fa] ). It prohibits discriminatory and anti-competitive practices by local administrative and public bodies against products, business operators and investors from other parts of China, and Fines for monopoly agreements and abuses of dominant position may range as high as one to ten percent of the wrongdoing company's total sales volume in the relevant market during the previous year...
