China's dot-com economy grew nearly 63 percent year on year in the second quarter, despite increasing inflation and the effects of the Sichuan earthquake, a Shanghai-based research firm reported recently. Internet in China: Virtual Worlds Roundup
BusinessWeek published a special report on virtual world recently, with one article on virtual World in China which featured Hipihi, Novoking and UOneNet (a.k.a. uWorld). Hipihi has announced the beginning of its public beta testing phase, after over a year private test. uWorld, another virtual world on BusinessWeek’s article which was first profiled in October 2007, finally started its close test in March. As Hipihi, uWorld also partnered with IBM on virtual world development. Kaiser Kuo is more optimistic on it, he thought “deep-rooted MMORPG culture” in China and “willingness of Chinese to strike up online friendships with strangers” will help them in the long run [...]

Internet in China: consumption expected to rise 45.8% in 2008
China's Internet consumption hit 398.8 billion yuan (53.89 billion U.S. dollars) last year and is expected to reach 581.5 billion yuan in 2008, up 45.8 percent, according to a survey released recently. The 'Netguide 2008' survey, which provides a wrap-up of China's2007 cyber world, polled more than 300 web sites and about 200 enterprises, with 50,786 interviewees around the country [...]

Internet in China: online gamers are mostly students
Students make up the biggest group of online game players in China, followed by IT and media industry workers, according to a survey released recently, Beijing Business Today reported. The survey, jointly conducted by 17173.com, a Chinese online game Website, and iResearch Consulting Group, said almost 60 percent of gamers were in their 20s and 95 percent were below 35 years old.High school graduates accounted for 35 percent of Chinese gamers, the report said. One-third of the respondents have a college education and 23 percent a university diploma.
