Investing in China: Shanghai to launch plan to use yuan for foreign trading

Shanghai is set to be among the first to implement a pilot program to settle overseas trade using the Chinese RMB yuan to consolidate its international financial hub position, the Shanghai Financial Services Office said recently. Using the yuan as a settlement currency for international trade is a step forward to internationalizing the currency and will also boost Shanghai as an international financial hub. The city is a magnet for overseas financial players, home to the China headquarters of giants such as HSBC and Citigroup. Living in China: Shanghai foreigner influx doubles in five years

The number of expats living in Shanghai and those working in local foreign-invested enterprises almost doubled from 2002 to 2006, according to a Shanghai Federation of Trade Unions report released recently. Issued every five years, the report said there were a total of 119,876 expatriates living in the city in 2006, compared to 61,610 in 2002. The number of expats working in foreign-invested companies in the city increased from 40,076 to 76,873 over the same period...

Living in China: Shanghai heads list of expats’ favorite cities

Shanghai maintains the highest quality of life on Chinese mainland for Asian expats, but environmental pollution problem is still a concern, according to the latest survey. The Location Ranking Survey, conducted by one of the world's largest human resources organizations, ECA International, ranked Shanghai in 11th place in Asia and 78th in the world in terms of expat living conditions. China Enacts National Competition Law

Culminating a 13-year drafting process, on August 30 the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress enacted China's first competition law, the Anti-Monopoly Law ( [Fan Longduan Fa] ). It prohibits discriminatory and anti-competitive practices by local administrative and public bodies against products, business operators and investors from other parts of China, and Fines for monopoly agreements and abuses of dominant position may range as high as one to ten percent of the wrongdoing company's total sales volume in the relevant market during the previous year...
