Chinese People and Their Mobile Phones: China starts 3G commercial trials in 8 cities
"The parent of China Mobile (0941.HK: Quote, Profile, Research), the country's top wireless operator, have started commercial trials of a homegrown third-generation wireless standard, TD-SCDMA, in eight cities on April 1, state media said recently. Shares in several Hong Kong-listed equipment vendors, including China Communications Services Corp Ltd (0552.HK: Quote, Profile, Research) and China Wireless Technologies Ltd (2369.HK: Quote, Profile, Research), rose on Friday, as investors anticipate heavy spending on telecoms gear. The commercial trials will help to improve TD-SCDMA technology, as well as provide better mobile services during the Beijing Olympics, according to Xinhua News agency."  read on

Internet in China: Shanghai to establish the first citywide wireless broadband network in mainland China
"Shanghai will have established a citywide wireless broadband network by 2010: Shanghai’s Municipal Informatization Commission and China Telecom Shanghai revealed that wireless demonstration areas will be ready for use in 2008. A number of regions are currently competing to become exhibition areas and obtain future construction projects. At present, people can access a wireless network in Jiading District in the north of Shanghai. Wireless will probably be available in most areas in the city's central Huangpu District, where the municipal government buildings are located, by the end of the year, said Hua Ruiqiang, Shanghai Telecom's senior manager..."  read on

"Simple SMS-based services might lose their appeal in China soon, since cell phones equipped with applications such as web browser, global positioning system and multimedia function are getting popular among Chinese consumers: a survey released recently by the CCID Consulting showed that 31,668 people had been interviewed and 37 percent of them would like to choose cell phones with which they can surf online when they intended to buy a new one, while 33 percent hoped they could get one with the GPS function, a helpful tool to China's increasing car owners..."  read on

Shanghai IT income set to beat US$128billion
"Revenue of Shanghai's information technology industry is set to double last year's figure to surpass 1 trillion yuan (US$128 billion) in 2010 when the World Expo is held here.
