Living in China: Study finds obesity may be a growing problem among kids in Shanghai
"Researchers are concerned that obesity may become a bigger problem among children in Shanghai after completing a study that found kids here have almost the same average height and weight as those in the United States, Shanghai News Times reported. The research team, under the leadership of Jiang Yifang, dean of children nutrition at the Children Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University, found that boys aged 10 to 15 were slightly taller and heavier on average than those in the US..."  read on

"India, China, and Brazil saw bigger growth in the millionaire population last year than anywhere else, and wealth in the Asia-Pacific is expected to grow nearly 8 percent a year to 2012 despite a slowdown in the world at large, a survey showed. Living in China: Cost of food drives up Consumer Price Index to 8.5%
"China's consumer price index(CPI) rose 8.5 percent in April, mainly driven by uncurbed food costs, the National Bureau of Statistics(NBS) said recently. The figure, compared with 8.3 percent in March and a nearly 12-year-high of 8.7 percent in February, was broadly in line with most forecasts. Living in China: Beijing’s Consumer Price Index rose 6.5% in April 2008
"Beijing's consumer price index (CPI) rose 6.5% in April, according to the latest statistics from the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Statistics and the Chinese National Bureau of Statistics Beijing Survey Organization. Food prices rose 21.6%; while non-food prices rose 0.3%. Consumer goods prices rose 8.7% and that of service rose 0.8%. Food prices increased by 21.6% as compared with the same month last year, among which grain prices increased 9.0%; oil prices increased 29.2%; meat and its products prices increased 46.8%; egg prices increased 6.3%; aquatic products increased 19.9%; and vegetables prices increased 11.4%..."  read on

Living in China: Shanghai’s noise pollution worsens as air, water quality improves
"Water and air quality improved in Shanghai last year, but noise pollution was worse, the city's Environment Protection Administration said. Water quality in the Huangpu River showed signs of improvement for the first time in five years, the administration said in an annual report before Thursday's World Environment Day, according to the Oriental Morning Post. Road noise on Shanghai streets hit an average of 71.9 dB during the day while it dropped to 65.9 dB at night, failing to meet last year's target, the report said..."  read on

"The number of expats living in Shanghai and those working in local foreign-invested enterprises almost doubled from 2002 to 2006, according to a Shanghai Federation of Trade Unions report released recently. Issued every five years, the report said there were a total of 119,876 expatriates living in the city in 2006, compared to 61,610 in 2002.
