Chinese People and Their Mobile Phones: over 592 million users by the end of May/2008
"The mobile phone subscribers in China soared to 592 million by the end of May/2008, nearly half of its 1.3 billion population. The number rose by 44.8 million in the first five months of this year as mobile operators cut phone rates to attract customers, the Xinhua News Agency said, citing the Ministry of Information Industry. Geography is also a factor, with many pockets of excellence living separate lives–more an archipelago than an interlinked whole. A glance at the map also reveals that the hot spots of innovation lie along the east coast. In bleak contrast stands the number of R&D facilities in the western and central provinces. Chinese People and Their Mobile Phones: 6 Telecoms to Merge Their Assets
"China has told its six telecommunications companies to merge their assets, allowing fixed-line carriers to expand into wireless services and creating three operators that will offer phone and Internet connections to 1.3 billion people. Under the plan, the parent of China Telecom will buy a mobile phone network from the parent of China Unicom, which in turn will merge with the company that controls the China Netcom Group, the Ministry of Industry and Information said in a statement on Saturday. Chinese media revenue to reach 77 billion US dollars in 2008
"Chinese media industry revenue is expected to increase 13.1 percent to 554 billion yuan (about 79.14billion U.S. dollars) in 2008, said a report released by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences recently. The figure was 481.1 billion yuan (over 68 billion US dollars) in 2007, up 13.6 percent year on year, according to the report, which was based on data collected up to February 2008. Living in China: Shanghai GDP increases 13.3% in 2007
"Shanghai, the most powerful economic hub of China, achieved GDP of US$1.2 trillion in 2007, up 13.3% from a year earlier, marking a double-digit growth for 16 consecutive years, the Shanghai Statistics Bureau announced recently. Chinese People and Their Mobile Phones: China starts 3G commercial trials in 8 cities
"The parent of China Mobile (0941.HK: Quote, Profile, Research), the country's top wireless operator, have started commercial trials of a homegrown third-generation wireless standard, TD-SCDMA, in eight cities on April 1, state media said recently. Shares in several Hong Kong-listed equipment vendors, including China Communications Services Corp Ltd (0552.HK: Quote, Profile, Research) and China Wireless Technologies Ltd (2369.HK: Quote, Profile, Research), rose on Friday, as investors anticipate heavy spending on telecoms gear. The commercial trials will help to improve TD-SCDMA technology, as well as provide better mobile services during the Beijing Olympics, according to Xinhua News agency."  read on

China, Socialism & Consumer Behavior: 15 million private cars on chinese roads
"According to the China's National Bureau of Statistics report -- 2007 national economic and social development statistical communique -- China's total number of privately-owned vehicles increased 32.5% to 15.22 million. The communique points out that by the end of 2007, the total number of civilian vehicles reached 56.97 million (including 14.68 million three-wheel motor vehicles and low-speed vehicles): a growth of 14.3% over the previous year. Among them, 35.34 million are private cars: an increase of 20.8%. There are 19.58 million civilian cars, an increase of 26.7%, 15.22 million of which are private cars."  read on
