Internet in China: online shoppers spend 2.3 billion U.S. dollars in 1st half of 2008
"Online Chinese shoppers spent 16.2 billion yuan (2.3 billion U.S. dollars) in 19 major cities in the first half of 2008, China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) said on recently. The findings were based on a survey carried out in four municipalities directly under the central government -- Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and Chongqing -- and 15 developed cities such as Changchun, Dalian, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Jinan and Guangzhou, among others..."  read on

Internet in China: Chinese market overtakes U.S. as top Web market
"China has surpassed the United States to become the world's largest Internet market by number of users, a research firm said on recently. The estimate by Beijing-based BDA was based on data from China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) which indicated that the country's Internet users totaled 210 million at end-2007. China software industry reports 20% rise in revenue
"China's software sector generated 580 billion yuan (about 80.8 billion U.S. dollars) in revenue in 2007, an annual increase of 20.8 percent, the Ministry of Information Industry reported: sales of software products surged 22.5 percent to 201.7 billion yuan, while system integration income rose 16 percent to 147.8 billion yuan (nearly 21 billion US dollars). The income of software and information technology services hit 97.8 billion yuan (over 13 billion US Dollars), up 24.8 percent. Revenues of embedded system software hit 115.5 billion yuan (around 16 billion US dollars), up 21.8 percent year on year..."  read on

Internet in China: consumption expected to rise 45.8% in 2008
"China's Internet consumption hit 398.8 billion yuan (53.89 billion U.S. dollars) last year and is expected to reach 581.5 billion yuan in 2008, up 45.8 percent, according to a survey released recently. "A range of new payment services through mobile phones has put a virtual withdrawal machine in consumers' hands, enabling 8 million mobile users in China to pay bills, buy insurance or book tickets. Internet in China: Alibaba.com largest IPO since Google went public
"Alibaba.com, the largest business-to-business portal in China underwent its first day of public share trading in Honk Kong, and the results exceeded all expectations, as the price tripled, raising $1.5 billion. The public offering is expected to raise nearly $2 billion in Hong Kong, making its debut offering as large as Google’s 2004 I.P.O. in the United States.
